Keynote speech of Mr. Haukur Hardarson at the WGC closing ceremony

Keynote speech of Mr. Haukur Hardarson at the WGC closing ceremony

The next energy revolution will not happen without a green transition in heating and cooling - Geothermal is the best solution Mr. Haukur Hardarson, the Chairman and Founder of Arctic Green Energy, delivered a significant speech during the closing ceremony of the highly successful World Geothermal Congress (WGC) in Beijing in 2023. In his address, he emphasized that the next energy revolution cannot take place without a green transition in heating and cooling. Despite remarkable advancements in decarbonizing electricity generation and transportation, the critical areas of heating and cooling have been neglected. At present, heating and cooling demand uses more than 50% of the world's total energy consumption annually. Unfortunately, these vital functions still heavily rely on the burning of polluting fossil fuels, which not only leads to environmental degradation, air pollution and health hazards but also lacks the profitability, price stability and health benefits that geothermal energy offers. Mr. Hardarson highlighted that until we effectively address the challenges associated with heating and cooling, the world will struggle to meet its climate targets. Geothermal energy, which has been underutilized for far too long, should now take center stage. The mission of the geothermal community is to educate decision-makers, policymakers, and the public about the immense potential of geothermal energy and the positive impact it has on cities worldwide. During the congress, Arctic Green Energy, in partnership with Sinopec made a momentous announcement about taking their joint venture in China Sinopec Green Energy (SGE) already the world´s largest district heating company to a global platform.SGE aims to work with partners to transform urban landscapes and replace smog-filled skies with clear, blue horizons using geothermal energy. Pannonian Basin as a platform for geothermal leadership – interview with Arctic Green Energy’s COO, Eirikur Bragason In an interview with Eirikur Bragason on CEEENERGY NEWS, the Chief Operating Officer of Arctic Green Energy stated the focus was on the challenges and opportunities facing the European geothermal sector, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. Bragason highlighted the potential for geothermal district heating networks to replace fossil fuel-based heating, which accounts for a significant portion of energy consumption in cities. Central Europe, in particular, has favorable conditions for geothermal development. However, the main challenge lies in preparing existing heating grids for renewable energy by lowering operational temperatures and planning new grids accordingly. Bragason emphasized the importance of implementing energy transfer in steps, including upgrading heating systems in residential areas and involving house owners in long-term maintenance plans. Arctic Green Energy is actively involved in multiple geothermal projects across Central Europe, including Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Croatia. Bragason identified the countries in the Pannonian Basin (Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia) as potential leaders in adopting geothermal district heating due to the suitability of their geothermal resources. Looking ahead, Arctic Green Energy envisions most cities in Central Europe being heated with geothermal energy or waste heat within a decade, resulting in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The company sees a few key players in the industry with access to funding, and the regulatory frameworks in Central Europe are being adapted to facilitate the financing of geothermal projects. Arctic Green Energy will participate in the Budapest Geothermal Summit on June 5 in Hungary, where Mr Eirikur Bragason will participate in the Panel discussions for “Geothermal Opportunities in District and Industrial Heating” at 13:50-14:05.
